AMSCO/ATC Upgrades—6” Exchanger

The AMSCO/ATC linear exchanger is driven by: a 110vdc motor, a reduction drive, a belt link to a shaft with a big friction roller working against a knurled steel rod. Heard enough? The friction roller can be seen in blue at left. It gets worse! There is box with 3 complex relays needed to provide the drive and breaking signals to the motor. The contacts frequently weld together and are prone to other failures. Notice all the junk hanging below the carriage sled—everything below the red bearing blocks.

We trash everything below the base plate (see red square above) and replace it all with air cylinders (in red left). The carriage is very fast, quiet and always positions exactly as required. The only maintenance required is an occasional drop of oil on the linear bearing. The big goofy relays disappear, too. The carriage is controlled by a standard ASCI station control board—firmware and all. You can buy the cylinders downtown. Try that with the motor or the relays!
