Quantum Systems—Transfer Units |
|
The ‘double bypass-storage’ devices were sold to ‘increase the throughput’ of the system. The idea was to allow two carriers destined for each others’ loop to dispatch at the same time and pass each other in the storage units. They do that but at a very high price in transaction overhead time and mechanical problems. The ‘storage units’ have little or no redeeming value whatsoever. Onsite studies showed that the overhead of moving carriers into and out of the storage units offset any supposed gain..Further, most of the alarms had something to do with the transfer units. The original installation simply queued carriers in the ceiling instead of in the stations for no real throughput gain. This study was done by tracking the average queue time for carriers in the stations before and after the ZTUs were disabled (and then removed). This may not necessarily be true in the case of very long tube runs (a city block or so) but the mod was very successful in the facilities where applied. |
